Privacy Policy
Effective 11 September 2026
The short version. Afterwards has no user accounts and no server that holds your information. We do not collect, receive or store any of your personal data. What you record about the person who died stays on your device, and in your own private iCloud account, which we cannot read.
Who this policy covers
This policy applies to the Afterwards iOS app ("the app") published by Kasun Rangana M W ("we", "us"). It explains what the app does with information on your device, and what little leaves it.
Information we collect
None. There is no sign-up, no login and no account. The app contains no analytics, no advertising, no tracking and no third-party software development kits. We do not know who you are, whether you have opened the app, or whose estate you are administering.
The one request the app makes over the internet
The checklist is based on government guidance, which changes. So that corrections reach you without waiting for an app update, the app periodically asks our content server whether a newer version of the checklist is available, and downloads it if so.
That request carries nothing about you: no identifier, no device name, and nothing at all about the estate, the tasks you have completed, or the documents you have filed. It asks for a file and receives a file.
As with any request to any website, the server can see the internet address the request came from, because that is how a reply finds its way back. We do not use it to identify you, build a profile, or link one request to another, and it is never combined with anything else.
If the request fails, or you are offline, the app carries on with the copy of the checklist it already has.
What the app stores on your device
Everything you enter is written to your device's own storage:
- The name you give the estate, which is usually the name of the person who died, and the date of death
- Your answers to the opening questions, which decide what the app shows you: whether a coroner is involved, whether there is a will, whether there is property, and so on
- Dates you record as things happen: when the medical examiner confirmed the cause of death, when the grant of probate was issued, when the deceased estates notice was published, and when a property sale completed
- Which steps you have marked as done, and when
- Any notes you type against a step
- Documents you file: the file itself, the title you give it, and the date you added it
- How many certified copies of the death certificate you hold
Deleting the app removes all of this from your device.
Documents you file
The document area holds files you choose yourself from the Files app or iCloud Drive: PDFs, images, plain text and rich text. The app copies the file into its own storage so it is there when you need it. Nothing is uploaded to us. The app does not ask for access to your camera or your photo library, and cannot read any file you have not picked.
iCloud, and sharing with family
If you are signed in to iCloud, the app keeps the estate synchronised between your own devices using Apple's CloudKit service. It is stored in your private iCloud database, under your Apple Account, and is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy. We have no access to it, cannot read it, and hold no copy.
You can also invite other people — usually a brother or sister who is administering the estate with you. Inviting someone shares that estate, and everything in it, with the person you invite, through Apple's sharing. You choose each person, you choose whether they can make changes or only look, and you can withdraw access at any time from the Sharing screen. The invitation is between you and them. It does not pass through us and we cannot see who you have invited.
The app works fully without iCloud. If you are not signed in, everything stays on the one device and nothing syncs or shares.
The lock on the app
Afterwards can be locked behind Face ID, Touch ID or your device passcode, because an estate holds account numbers and personal documents. Your face, fingerprint and passcode are handled entirely by iOS and never reach the app: it is told only whether the check passed. We receive nothing.
Exporting and sharing what you have recorded
When you export a summary as a PDF, or the whole estate as a compressed folder, the app hands the file to the iOS share sheet and you decide where it goes — a solicitor, a sibling, your own files, a printer. That transfer is between you and whatever you choose. We are not involved and receive no copy.
Purchases
The full app is a single one-time purchase, not a subscription, sold through Apple's App Store. Apple processes the payment and records that you bought it. We never see your payment details, billing address or Apple Account information. Apple provides us with anonymous, aggregated sales figures that cannot identify you.
The app asks Apple whether this Apple Account has bought the app. That exchange is between your device and Apple.
Children
Afterwards is a tool for adults settling an estate and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone, of any age, because we do not collect information at all.
Your rights over your data
Because your information never leaves your control, you do not need to ask us to access, correct, export or delete it:
- Access and export — the whole estate can be exported as a PDF or a compressed folder from inside the app at any time.
- Correct — every date, answer, note and document can be edited or replaced in the app.
- Delete — delete individual documents or the whole estate in the app. Deleting the app removes everything from the device. To remove synced copies, delete the app's data from iCloud in Settings › Apple Account › iCloud. If you have shared an estate, stop sharing it first, so it is removed from the other person's devices too.
We hold no copy of your data, so there is nothing for us to disclose, sell or delete. We have never sold user data and have none to sell.
Changes to this policy
If the app ever begins handling information differently, this page will be updated and the effective date above changed before that version ships. Material changes will also be described in the app's release notes.
