Email afterwards.app@icloud.com and you will get a reply within two working days. If someone has just died and you are stuck on something the app told you to do, say so at the top and it will be answered first.

If you are in the first few days. The one thing with a clock on it is registering the death: five days from the point the medical examiner confirms the cause, including weekends and bank holidays. Almost nothing else can start until that is done. It is the second step in the app, and the first three sections are free, so you do not need to buy anything to get through this part.

Common questions

Is this legal advice?

No. Afterwards organises publicly available guidance, mostly from GOV.UK, into the order you need it, and links to the original page for every step so you can read the source yourself. It cannot tell you what to do about your particular estate. Where a step is one where people commonly get it wrong or become personally liable, the app says so and suggests getting professional advice. Take that seriously — it is there for a reason.

What is free, and what do I pay for?

The first three sections are free and always will be: the first few days, the funeral, and telling people. That covers the part with deadlines attached and the part you hit while still in shock.

Everything after that — valuing the estate, probate, settling debts, distributing what is left, the document store and the export — is unlocked by a single one-time purchase. It is not a subscription, and there is nothing to cancel.

I bought it already, but it is asking me to pay again

Tap Restore purchases. It is on the purchase screen, and also in Settings behind the button in the top right. As long as you are signed in with the same Apple Account you bought it with, that will unlock it. A new phone, a reinstall, or a second device all work this way.

If Restore says it cannot find a purchase, check which Apple Account is signed in under Settings › Apple Account › Media & Purchases. Buying on a partner's device with their account is the usual explanation.

How do I share the estate with my brother or sister?

Open the estate, go to Sharing, and invite them. They need an iPhone or iPad signed in to iCloud. You choose for each person whether they can make changes or only look, and you can remove anyone at any time. When you invite someone, they see everything in that estate, including any documents you have filed.

What happens if I do not use iCloud?

The app works completely, but only on the one device. Nothing syncs and nothing can be shared. If you later sign in to iCloud, what you have already entered stays where it is.

Is any of this sent to you?

No. There is no account and no server holding your information. What you record stays on your device and in your own iCloud. The privacy policy sets out exactly what is stored and the one request the app makes over the internet.

Does it cover Scotland or Northern Ireland?

Not yet. The law and the process are genuinely different in both, and a checklist that is nearly right would be worse than none. The app covers England and Wales only, and says so before you start.

Something in the app looks wrong or out of date

Please tell us — this is the most useful email we get. Quote the title of the step and what you believe is wrong, and if you have a link to the current guidance, include it. Corrections are delivered to everyone over the air without waiting for an app update, so a good report can be live within days.

How do I delete everything?

Delete the estate in the app, or delete the app itself, which removes everything from that device. If you use iCloud, also remove the app's data in Settings › Apple Account › iCloud. If you have shared the estate with someone, stop sharing it first, so it is removed from their devices too.

I want a refund

Refunds are handled entirely by Apple, not by us — we have no ability to issue one. Go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, and choose the purchase. If Apple turns it down and you think that is wrong, email us and we will do what we can.

Reporting a problem

Email afterwards.app@icloud.com. These four things turn a report into a fix:

Please do not send anything from the estate itself — names, account numbers or documents. They are never needed to fix a bug.
